Adolescence
(9-18 years old) is an important status where puberty begins which a child develops into an adult
Difference between primary sexual and secondary sexual characteristics
- primary sexual characteristics: relate to the changes and development of reproductive organs ( that are present at birth and mature when sex hormones are release)
- secondary sexual characteristics: are outward signs of development from a child into a man or woman( develop when sex hormones are release)
Puberty
During adolescence young people experience a physical changed. This takes place in girls around 11-13 yrs and in boy 13-15 yrs
How does puberty starts
It starts when a hormone in the brain sends a signal to the pituitary gland which releases hormones that stimulate the ovaries for girls and the testes for boys to produce sex hormones
The role of hormones in sexual development
In boys: testosterone produce by the testes
In girls: oestrogen and progesterone produce by the ovaries
Primary sexual characteristics
- Girls: menstruation begins, uterus and vagina grow, ovulation occurs
- Boys: penis enlarges , prostate gland produces secretion, testes enlarged and produce sperm
Secondary sexual characteristics
- Girls: growth or armpit and pubic hair, increase layers of fat under the skin, breasts enlarge, growth spurt( height increase rapidly), hips widen
- Boys: growth of facial hair, growth of armpit and pubic hair, increased muscle, growth spurt, Larynx grows causing voice to deepen
