- cardiovascular problems: artery blockage, heart attack
- allergies: allergic rhinitis

Happens when harmful substances contaminate the atmosphere. Pollutants are taken into the body via the nose and mouth or through the skin
Outdoor pollutants: traffic fumes, domestic fumes, industry
Indoor pollutants: cleaning chemicals, aerosols, cigarettes smoke, mould/bacteria

- Poor ventilation damp and mould causing respiratory problems
- Poor sanitation causing a high risk of infection
- overcrowding causing anxiety and depression
- inadequate heating: hypothermia
- lack of outdoor spaces: cardiovascular problems
