How can injuries occur?
Internal force: sudden stress on body
External force: impact with someone or caused by environment e.g. Heat - dehydration
Overuse: e.g. Shin splints
Chronic injuries: not treated or given time to heal, insufficient rest
Name the common types of injury.
Fractures (open and closed)
Joint injuries (dislocation, tendon damage, torn cartilage)
Soft tissue injuries (sprains, strains, bruises)
Skin damage (cuts, grazes and blisters)
Concussion
Environmental (dehydration, hypothermia, hyperthermia)
How would you treat fracture and dislocation?
- move as little as possible
- support injured part
- seek medical advice
How would you treat sprains and strains?
- RICE method
- REST ICE COMPRESSION ELEVATION
How would you treat torn cartilage?
- ice pack
- RICE
How would you treat cuts and grazes?
- if deep apply pressure
- check for dirt
- cover with clean dressing
How would you treat shock?
- talk and distract
- reassure them
- raise legs
- sit them down
What is DRABC and when is it used?
For unconsciousness or concussion.

How would stress and tension affect your performance?
Would affect your ability to work as a team, would decrease concentration levels, affect sensible decision making.
How would anxiety affect your performance?
Focus would be on the anxiety and not the sport, may be anxious as want to do well in big competition or event.
How would boredom affect your performance?
Get bored when your mentally tired of a repetitive activity, concentration drops, stop performing skills well
How would a lack of motivation affect your performance?
You may be bored, performance suffers
How would your personality affect your performance?
Introverts more nervous and stressed, choose individual sports
Extroverts choose fast paced team sports with high excitement
How would aggression affect your performance?
Can be good if kept under control to motivate you
As you get tired or stressed, can become harder to control, could break rules or injure opponents.
How can you prevent injury / what precautions should you take?
- warm up and stretch pre exercise and cool down post exercise
- obey and know rules of game
- use safe equipment in good condition
- water safety equipment / protective gear
- be fit enough for your sport as well as injury free already
- know limits, don’t overdo, don’t lift too heavy or incorrectly
