Define leisure.
Something we choose to do in our own free time that we do not have to do.
Give examples of low and high impact active leisure.
Low impact: yoga / walking
High impact: aerobics / dancing / kick boxing
What are the three categories of recreation?
Physical recreation
Outdoor recreation
Lifelong sports
Describe physical recreation.
Playing for intrinsic rewards (things that can’t be given e.g. Confidence, endorphins etc)
Describe outdoor recreation.
Activity associated with the natural environment and generally a challenge e.g. Absailing, rock climbing etc.
Describe lifelong sport.
Sport that can be carried throughout your whole life at any age e.g. Yoga.
What factors can affect the activities you do for physical recreation?
- location: e.g. Easier to surf if closer to beach
- age: e.g. Activities may suit diff ages e.g. Bowls for pensioners
- provision / cost: e.g. Some activities more expensive
Define recreation.
Something you do in your leisure time to relax or be active.
Why has leisure time increased over time?
- higher levels of unemployment
- shorter working weeks
- part time and shift work
- technological advances: e.g. Labouring devices such as dishwashers so more free time
What are user groups?
Particular groups of people who would use leisure facilities.
Give three examples of user groups.
Mothers and toddlers
Unemployed people
Shift workers
What is meant by private sector?
Independently owned businesses in which you pay a premium to attend.
What is meant by public sector?
The role of local and national sports providers.
Describe private sector facilities.
- set up by private companies to make profit
- often fee paying members only clubs
- more expensive
- high quality facilities
- e.g. Fitness first
Describe the public sector facilities.
- paid for by national and local governments out of taxes and lottery
- available for everyone
- relatively cheap
- non profit
- e.g. LQ centre, aqua splash, sports pitches
