Q

What happens in a physical change?

A

A physical change alters the arrangement/movement of the particles, or the physical appearance of the substance (one or more physical properties change). In a physical change no new substances are made.

Q

What happens in a chemical change?

A

A chemical change alters the particle itself, and rearranges the atoms into new combinations (forming a new chemical substance). The substance often looks and smells different, and has different properties. They are non-reversible.

Q

What can a chemical change involve?

A
  • elements combining to form new compounds
  • compounds decomposing into simpler substances
  • compounds reacting or decomposing in different ways to form new substances
  • change in colour
  • bubbles or fizzing
  • change in temperature
  • change in solubility
