Physical and Chemical Changes Flashcards
1
Q
Examples of a physical change.
A
Freezing, boiling, evaporation, dissolving, crushing.
2
Q
What happens in a physical change?
A
A physical change alters the arrangement/movement of the particles, or the physical appearance of the substance (one or more physical properties change). In a physical change no new substances are made.
3
Q
Examples of a chemical change.
A
Burning, rusting, or decomposing.
4
Q
What happens in a chemical change?
A
A chemical change alters the particle itself, and rearranges the atoms into new combinations (forming a new chemical substance). The substance often looks and smells different, and has different properties. They are non-reversible.
5
Q
What can a chemical change involve?
A
- elements combining to form new compounds
- compounds decomposing into simpler substances
- compounds reacting or decomposing in different ways to form new substances
- change in colour
- bubbles or fizzing
- change in temperature
- change in solubility
