Microscope and its Parts Flashcards
1
Q
What are the parts of a microscope?
A
Eyepiece, body tube, arm, objective lenses, revolving nose piece, stage, stage clips, coarse focus knob, fine focus knob, diaphragm, light source, and the base.
2
Q
Eyepiece
A
- holds the lens and magnifies
3
Q
Body tube
A
- holds the lens at a certain distance from the lower lens
- transmits light from the specimen to the eye
4
Q
Arm
A
- supports the body tube
5
Q
Objective lenses
A
- contains lenses for magnification
6
Q
Revolving nose piece
A
- rotating devise that holds the objective lenses
7
Q
Stage
A
- supports the slide
8
Q
Stage clips
A
- holds the slide in place
9
Q
Coarse focus knob
A
- moves the stage up and down
- used to obtain the initial focus on low power
- never used on high power
10
Q
Fine focus knob
A
- moves the stage up and down but only slightly
used after obtaining an image with the coarse focus knob
11
Q
Diaphragm
A
- an adjustable opening under the stage that allows different amounts of light onto the stage
12
Q
Light source
A
- provides light for the microscope
13
Q
Base
A
- supports the microscope
14
Q
What are the steps for using a microscope?
A
- Place the slide onto the stage
- Ensure that the lowest power objective lens is selected
- Adjust the coarse focus
- Twist the revolving nose piece to switch to the high-power objective lens
- Adjust the fine focus
- Use the fine focus knob again if necessary to focus the image
15
Q
How do you calculate the total magnification?
A
eye piece lens X x magnification lens X
e.g. 4X x 5X = 20X
