Changing States of Matter Flashcards
What needs to be added or removed to change a state of matter?
Heat
What happens when particles are heated?
They gain more energy and the form of matter they are in will start to expand. This is because the particles move faster as they have more energy, and therefore want more space.
- Melting, boiling, evaporating
- Volume increases
What happens when particles are cooled down?
They loose energy and the form of matter they are in will start to contract. This is because as the particles get more cold they move slower and start to come closer together.
- Condensation or condensing, freezing
- Volume decreases
What is sublimation?
When a solid is changed to a gas without becoming a liquid first.
