Atoms, Elements, and Compounds Flashcards
What is an atom?
Atoms are the smallest part of matter, and everything is made up of atoms.
What is an element?
Elements are a substance containing only one kind of atom, making it pure. They cannot be separated into simpler materials (except during nuclear reactions).
How many elements exist?
There are over 100 exiting elements in the periodic table.
What is a compound?
Compounds are a pure substance that contain two or more elements. In compounds, atoms are chemically bonded and form molecules which are always uniform. Compounds require a chemical reaction in order to be separated.
What happens to the properties of an element when they are in a compound?
The element’s properties usually change when they become compounds.
What is a molecule?
Molecules are 2 or more atoms chemically bonded together.
