Q

Why pass out while standing a long time?

how will not locking knees help?

A
  • Here gravity works on the blood in our bodies. with gravity blood pressure in our legs is increased compared to that of the heart or brain
  • same can happen in the lungs

Q

Why do we want to keep alveoli “dry”?

A
  • alveoli allow oxygen to move from air to blood. Oxygen is not terribly water soluble.
  • If capillaries leaked water into alveoli it would impair ability of oxygen to cross blood

14
Q

What are the two general pressures at work with starling forces?

15
Q

Hydrostatic pressure?

where are these

A

(fluid pushing against the tissue or walls of the capillary)

  • The capillary (Pc)
    • blood pressure in capillary trying to push fluid into alveoli
  • The tissue (Pt)
    • in rest of body this pushes fluid into capillary

16
Q

hydrostatic pressure in the lungs
what happens to Ptissue in the lungs?

what causes this?

A
17
Q

Oncotic pressure

where?

A

(think osmotic pressure of the fluids involved)

  • The plasma (capillary oncotic pressure) πc
    • tries to pull water into the capillary
  • The tissue (tissue oncotic pressure) πTissue
    • tries to pull water into the alveolus
18
Q

Forces moving water from capillary to alveolus?

A
19
Q

Forces moving water from alveolus to capillary?

A
20
Q

Starling forces equation for the lung?

what is the biggest force?

A

Pc (hydrostatic pressure in the capillary)is the largest single force

21
Q

Net result of adding up starling forces is favor net filtration where?

this good or bad?

A

favors net filtration of fluid into the alveoli

(this is bad)

22
Q

With a net force into alveoli

fluid is bad for gas exchange so what do we do?

A

Lymphatics

23
Q

Metabolic functions of the lung

(Blood pressure)

start with what?

end product?

intermediates?

where are things produced?

A

Angiotensin can raise blood pressure through aldosterone

24
Q

What can ACE inhibitors do?

what does ACE stand for?

A
25
Q

Metabolic functions of the lung

Lead to production of what?

whats removed

A
