phrase three revision - jardi tancat Flashcards
describe phrase three
This phrase is danced by all six dancers in cannon (3 at a time) but I’ll be focussing on the guy in the centre of the stage. This phrase happens close to the middle of the dance at 8:25-8:42.
write out phrase three
- Start on the floor on your knees with your body bent over your legs
- Sit up so that you are on your knees and circle your arms around your head keeping them straight and roll towards stage right on your back
- Step out of roll to stand on upstage leg and develope other leg to the back with body in table-top and arms over your head
- Step back into a turn bringing your arms into your body and then develope your upstage leg out in front of you with your arms on your back and your body slightly over
- Step on lifted leg in a fondus and do a demi-grand rond de jambe in attitude with the other leg, foot flexed and one arm out to stage right and the other place bent on your back
- Step into a detourne with your arm joining together above your head then step out to a second position and draw your leg in towards stage right first then stage left with your arm going upwards beside you
- Go back into a second position but face towards stage left and bring your arms over your head and circle your pelvis around coordinating your arms to do the same
- Rond your downstage leg around your other leg and bend your arms in towards your body then cut into a lunge facing down stage left corner
- Turn out of lunge towards stage right back into a second position and fold your arms up to above your head with your head lifting up as well
- Cut out of position back into the same position with your arms down by your side, hands flexed and your head looking up in a high release (repeat twice)
how does phrase three show gesture
Gesture is shown at the very end of the phrase when the dancers turn out of the lunge and step into a second position with their arms above their head with head lifting up as well and the two cuts out of the position. Gesture is highlighted here with the hands aiming towards the ground representing their connection with the land.
how does phrase three show elevation
Elevation is shown at the start of the phrase when the dancers sit up from their crouch position into a circle of the arm above their head. I think this represents the start of a resistance from the hard work that they endure whilst working on the barren land
how does phase three show falling
Falling is highlighted when the dancers go into a lunge near the end of the phrase after the upwards pelvic circle. I think this fall was used here as a sort of connection with the land and the ground that they are working on
how does phrase three show travelling
Travelling is shown when the dancers move from the centre of the stage to the back right corner whilst doing other movements (close to the end of the phrase). This travelling was used to connect the dancers again from their separate position during the phrase whilst also showing other movements such as turns and lunges throughout the use of travel.
how does phrase three show turning
Turning is highlighted when the dancers step back into a turn bringing their arms into their body and then develope the backstage leg out in front of them. This turn connects the two developes but I think it represents bouncing back from one movement to another or bouncing back from one problem to another.
how does phrase three show stillness
In this phrase there aren’t many moments of long stillness but sharp and quick stillness is shown at the end of the phrase when the dancers cut into second positions with their arms by their side. This slight moment of stillness helps show that they are working on the land and that they are working hard.
how does phrase three use flexibility
Flexibility is shown in the hamstrings when the dancers do the developes in front and behind them. Flexibility will help these movements show more line with full extensions and allows the dancers to move through the phrase quickly and easily.
how does phrase three use alignment
Alignment is also shown during the developes as the dancers were maintaining a perfect position but moving in and out of them quickly such as when they went into a table top position with their legs being level and their knee’s being in line with their parallel feet and moving straight out of that. The alignment also helps the aesthetic look of the developes.
how does phrase three use strength
Strength is shown at the end of the phrase when the dancers are staying in a second position plie with their head upwards. This strength in their quadriceps helps the dancers endure the plie for longer and also helps allow them to endure the whole phrase.
