Photosynthesis Flashcards
What does glucose break down into?
Oxygen and water
Respiration is __________ of photosynthesis
The opposite
What is glucose used for in terms of respiration?
It provides energy for cells.
Glucose makes amino acids. What are they used for?
Enzymes
Glucose builds cellulose. What is that used for?
For plant cell walls.
Glucose produces starch. What is it used for?
Storing energy.
Glucose makes lipids…for what?
Energy stores in cells, and for strengthening cell walls.
Leaves are broad. Why is this useful?
For a large surface area of light to fall on.
Leaves are thin. Why is this useful?
So diffusion distances for gases are short.
Leaves contain chlorophyll. Why is this useful?
They are used in chloroplasts to absorb light.
Leaves have veins. Why is this useful?
They bring lots of water in the xylem to cells in leaves and remove products of photosynthesis in the phloem.
Leaves have air spaces. Why is this useful?
They allow carbon dioxide to get to the cells, and oxygen to leave by diffusion.
Leaves have guard cells. Why is this useful?
They open and close the stomata to regulate gas exchange.
