Hormones Flashcards
Pituitary gland
- Controls growth in children
- Stimulates the thyroid gland to make
thyroxine (which controls rate of metabolism) - Stimulates ovaries to produce and release
eggs in females - Stimulates testes to make sperm and
testosterone in males
Adrenal gland
Prepares the body for stressful situations-‘fight or flight’ response.
Ovary
Controls the development of the female secondary sexual characteristics and is involved in the menstrual cycle.
Thyroid glands
Controls the metabolic rate of the body.
Pancreas
Controls the level of glucose in the blood.
Testes
Controls the development of the male secondary sexual characteristics and is involved in the production of sperm.
What is a hormone?
Secrete chemicals produced by endocrine glands that control many processes in the body-hormones can act very rapidly, but the effects can happen very slowly.
What is a gland?
They produce hormones.
What is a target organ?
Produces the effect of hormones, carried to them by the blood.
What’s different about the hormonal system in comparison to the nervous system?
It’s quicker to act, but the length of the response is much longer.
Messages travel chemically through the blood, rather than electrical impulse through nerves.
