Evolution And Genetics Flashcards
Why can bacteria evolve rapidly?
They reproduce at a fast rate.
Why are bacterial pathogens quite worrying? (Outline the process)
Some strains produced by them may be resistant to antibiotics and so are not killed. They reproduce, and the population of the resistant strain increases by natural selection. Then, the resistant strain can spread to people who not yet have the bacteria.
Give the name of the bacteria that is resistant to antibiotics.
MRSA
How do you decrease the rate of development of antibiotic resistant strains?
Doctors shouldn’t prescribe antibiotics inappropriately.
Patients use the correct antibiotics prescribed.
Patients complete each course of the antibiotics.
Why is the development of new antibiotics costly and slow?
Because it may not keep up with the emergence of new resistant strains.
Who created the classification model?
Carl Linnaeus
How were organisms classified? (Give the hierarchy)
Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species.
How are organisms named?
They are named by the binomial system of genus and species.
Why were new models of classification proposed?
Evidence of internal structures of organisms became more developed due to improvements in microscopes and the understanding of biochemical processes progressed.
