Photosynthesis 3.4 Flashcards
1
Q
Photosynthesis
A
A process that captures energy from sunlight to make sugars that store chemical energy.
2
Q
Directly or indirectly, the energy for almost all organisms begin as….
A
sunlight
3
Q
Plants absorb _____ _______ in order to carry out _____________.
A
1.)visible light
2.)photosynthesis
4
Q
A molecule contained in chloroplasts that absorbs some of the energy in visible light.
A
Chlorophyll
5
Q
Plants have to maintain two types of Chlorophyll:
A
Chlorophyll A and Chlorophyll B
6
Q
Photosynthesis takes place in two stages
A
1.)Light dependent reactions
2.) Light independent reactions (AKA the Calvin cycle)
7
Q
Light Dependent Reactions/ Give 6 main points
A
- Capture energy from sunlight
-Take place within and across the membrane of the thylakoids - Require water and sunlight
-Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight - Oxygen is released
-Energy is transferred to molecules that carry energy, such as ATP.
8
Q
Light Independent Reactions/ 6 main points
A
- Occur in the stoma of chloroplasts
-Carbon dioxide is needed - use energy from light dependent reactions
-from sugars– usually glucose C6 H12 O6
-Energy is stored in the sugars(AKA Calvin cycle)
