Philosophy II Epistemology/ Principles Flashcards
Epistemology
Criteria in which truth is determined
How we know what we know
Custom
People act, think or behave in certain ways because “everyone does it”
Problem is if truth can change from country to country is it really a truth?
Tradition
Simply a custom that has been held for a long time
Traditional chiropractors used their hands only not because its straight but because they believe they are treating disease or cause by adjusting the spine
Time
It’s been done this way for as long as I can remember
Emotions or feelings
It feels right therefore it is
Emotions change which means the truth would change which it wouldn’t
They cloud our thinking
Instinct
I’ll-defined vague method of perception
Normally requires some previous knowledge
Examples are hunger and thirst. They tell us we need something but not what’s safe to eat or drink
Intuition or hunch
Claims knowledge of truth from and unknown source
Can’t explain why they know it- they just do!
Purely subjective
Revelation
Claims knowledge from a known source- typically a deity
There is no way to verify the information
Majority rule
Most of us think its true, therefore it is.
Flat earth, earth is center of universe
Election process, best president has the majority vote
Consensus Gentium
Unanimous opinion of a group, usually involves compromise
Jury makes decision in trial
Similar to majority rule
Realism
Things are in reality as the senses depict them
Authority
Accepting as facts the statements, ideas, or opinions of the highly trained or highly respected people.
Transferred authority
Someone who is an authority in one field and is accepted as an authority in another field
I.e. stars- actors, athletes
Pragmatism
If it works its true
Loose consistency
Takes non related statements as true if they don’t contradict one another
Coherence
Systematic explanation of all the facts
Rigorous consistency
Deductive in nature and no new information can be produced
Like mathematics
The Major Premise
Universal Intelligence is in all matter and continually gives to it all it’s properties and actions, thus maintaining it in existence
