What is phenylephrine?
A
Synthetic direct-acting sympathomimentic amine

How does phenylephrine work?
A
Acts on alpha adrenoreceptors.
No beta action.
Causes vasoconstriction and increased SVR

What is the dose of phenylephrine?
A
50-100mcg boluses titrated to effect
1mg vial contains 10mg - add to 100ml saline = 100mcg/ml

What is the absorption/distribution of phenylephrine?
A
Rapid increase in SVR lasting 5-10 mins

What are the CVS effects of phenylephrine?
A
Increase SVR
Increased BP
May cause reflex bradycardia

What are the other effects of phenylephrine?
A
Decreases renal blood flow

What is the metabolism of phenylephrine?
A
Hepatic metabolism by monoamine oxidase

What rate should an infusion of phenylephrine be started at?
A
30 - 60 micrograms/min (titrate to effect)
