Synthetic opioid
Clearl colourless solution (500 mcg/ml or 5mg/ml)

What is the dose of alfentanil?
A
5 - 25 mcg/kg

What are the uses of alfentanil?
A
- short acting analgesic (fast onset and offset)
- obtunding hypertensive response to airway manipulation
- sedation

What is the absorption/distribution of alfentanil?
A
- protein binding 85-92%
- volume of distribution 0.6 L/kg

What is the MOA of alfentanil?
A
Highly selective MOP opioid receptor agonist

What are the effects of alfentanil?
A
The same as morphine but:
- 10 - 20 x more potent
- vagally mediated bradycardia

What are the chemical properties of alfentanil?
A
- synthetic phenylpiperidine derivative
- pKa 6.5
- 80% unionized at pH 7.4
- faster onset than fentanyl!
- less lipid soluble than fentanyl
- smaller volume of distribution than fentanyl so in spite of lower clearance it’s half life is shorter
