What is the dose of atropine?
A
600mcg in 1 ml 200mcg - 600 mcg. Usually 300mcg for arrests titrated up to 1200mcg.

What is the MOA of atropine?
A
Competitive antagonist at muscarinic receptors

What is the absorption/distribution of atropine?
A
- Well absorbed orally (10-25% oral bioavailibility)
- Protein binding 50%
- Volume of distribution 2-4 L/kg

What are the uses of atropine?
A
- premed to decrease secretions
- treat bradycardias
- in ALS algorithm for PEA/asystole
- treatment of organophosphate poisoning

What are the CVS effects of atropine?
A
- tachycardia
- effect lasts 2-3hrs
- may precipitate arrhythmias by decreasing AV conduction time

What are the RS effects of atropine?
A
- bronchodilation
- increased RR

What are the CNS effects of atropine?
A
- crosses BBB causing central anticholinergic syndrome
- antiemetic
- antiparkinsonian effects

A
- antisialogogue
- decreases tone of lower oesophageal sphincter

What are the metabolic effects of atropine?
A
Inhibits sweating - may cause hyperpyrexia in children

A
- dry mouth
- blurred vision
- urinary retention

- Racemic mixture of D and L atropine
- Only L is active
