Phenology Flashcards
What is phenology?
the study of seasonal periodicity and timings of plant growth
What are vernal species?
Grow in the spring
What are aestival species?
grow in summer
What are autumnal species?
Grow in autumn/winter
What are herbal species?
Grow in winter
What type of soil do many relict woodland grow on?
Acid, dominated by oaks
Why do some species have poor regeneration?
many Oaklands have ground layer dominated by D.flexulosa, which is a poor trap of oak leaf litter which is important for acorn germination and provides important cover for the acorns
What is regeneration?
The process by which woodlands are restocked by trees that develop from seeds that fall and develop in situ
How is Deschampsia flexuosa tolerant to grazing?
lots of intercalary meristem, which cis capable of rapid cell division for rapid growth and regrowth
What are brown forest soils?
well drained with brownish subsoils where iron oxides created through weathering processes are bonded to silicate clays, low acidity, active mixing of the organic matter by organisms, no sharp bpundarioes
What are podzol soils?
Almost no mixing of mineral and organic matter by organisms.
Sharp boundaries between horizons, and distinct horizons (surface accumulation of organic matter, a bleached mineral horizon, a rusty- coloured layer)
more acidic,
