Life in the sea Flashcards
What percentage of the world is ocean?
70
What is average and max depth?
3794
11022
What are the qualities of water?
Liquidity - bond by h bonds, means is a liquid at high temp
heat capacity - unusually high specific heat
Density
Light
Sound
How much salt in sea water?
35 ppm average
How does salinity change the properties of water?
Freesing point lowers to -1.89, density increase, when sea ice forms it extrudes salt, leaving saltier water beneath
Why are the seas important?
Photoautotrophs in sea capture about 3% of suns energy, which is 24 000 times more than we use as a species
what are the major types of marine photoautotrophs?
macrophytes, and phytoplankton
What are macrophytes?
SEAWEED, BENTHIC, NEED TO BE ATTACHED TO SEABED, ARE RESTICTED TO SHALLOW ARES
What are phytoplankton?
Very small and float so no coastal dependence, produce about half the oxygen in the atmosphere, reproduce quickly,
What are the four classes of phytoplankton?
Cyanobacteria, Haptophytes, Dinoflagellates, Diatoms
What are the problem s with phytoplankton?
Tend to sink, however nutrients also sink, however light is restricted to top levels, creating two layers
How is the two layered dilemma overcome?
mixing of surface water by wind, coriolis effect, surface currents and upwelling of deep water
What is Thermohaline Circulation?
Cold water sinks near the poles and moves towards the equator. Tropical water is lifted, mixed and welled towards the surface. At the surface it is heated and moves towards the poles. Creates conveyer belt
How are organisms adapted to the two layered ocean?
Migrants or phenology
