Interactions Flashcards
What three factors affect plant distribution?
climactic, physiographic and edaphic
What are climactic factors?
e.g. rainfall, temp, light, humidity, local and microclimates are distinguished, one of main factors
What are physiographic factors?
determined by the landforms, the aspect determines the irradiance received
What are edaphic factors?
Associated with the soil, main fictional features of soil are that they provide anchorage, a source of water and nutrients
What are resources?
Commodities which are consumed by pants an are essential for growth
What are conditions?
Environmental variable to which plants respond,
What resource and conditions are required in photosynthesis?
Co2, Light
What are the three possible outcomes of interactions between species?
\+ = Species gains - = Species loses 0 = Species is unaffected
What are the six types of interaction?
Mutualism, facilitation, parasitism, competition, communalism, ammensalism
What is indirect competition?
Individuals attempt to obtain the same shared resource, means resource is limited, is density dependent
What is density dependent population control?
self thinning- above threshold no more individuals survive
reduction of reproductive output
When does competition occur?
When the growth or development of an individual is adversely affected by the presence of another individual
What is direct competition?
a form of direct antagonism between different species, less common in plants, e.g. strangulation ,allelopathy, parasitism
What is allelopathy?
The chemical inhibition of one plant by another due to the release into the environment of substances acting as germination or growth inhibitors
What is parasitism?
relationship between two species of plants or animals in which one benefits at the expense of the other
