Pharmacy Definitions Flashcards
What form is used to prescribe a medication?
DD 1289
What form is utilized to prescribe more than one medication?
NAVMED 6710/6 (Polyprescription)
What information should be on the Prescription?
- Patient’s name
- Date
- Patients DOB
- Full name of the drug, form of the drug, dosage, quantity
- Directions for the patient
- Signature of provider
- Refill Authorization
What are the principles of pharmacology?
- Factors that affect the actions of drugs
- Factors that affect drug reactions
- Types of drug interactions
- Factors influencing drug response interactions
What is pharmacokinetic?
Activities of the drug after it enters the body. (movement)
What is absorption?
Transfer of drug from body fluids to body tissues
what is active absorption?
Molecules such as protein or enzymes actively moves the drug across the membrane. (Form of ATP)
What is passive absorption?
Diffuse across the membrane, from higher to lower area of cocentration. (Water Soluble Drugs)
What isw pinocytosis?
Cells engulf the drug particle across the membrane. (Think Pacman)
What is bioavailability?
Percentage of the administered drug dose that reaches the systemic circulation
What are some factors that affect bioavailability?
- Form of the medication
- Route of administration
- Changes in liver metabolism
- Gi mucosa and motility
- Food and Drugs
- Solubility
What is solubility?
Drugs that are fat soluble are absorbed faster than water-soluble drugs
What is a therapeutic effect?
Drug levels in blood to produce the desired effect
what is metabolism?
Chemical reaction where the liver converts drugs to inactive compounds
Where does metabolism take place in the body?
Liver, Kidneys, Lungs, Plasma, Indestinal Mucosa
What is execretion?
Elimination of drugs from the body
What is half-life?
Time required for the body to eliminate 50% of the drug
What is pharmacodynamic?
Drug’s actions and effects within the body
What is a physical dependence?
Compulsive need to use a substance repeatedly to avoid mild to severe withdrawal symptoms
What is psychological dependence?
Compulsion to use a substance to obtain a pleasurable experience
What is pharmacogenetic disorder?
Genetically determined abnormal response to normal dose of a drug
What is a receptor?
Specialized macromolecule that binds to the drug molecule, altering the function of the cell and producing the therapeutic response
What is alterations in Cellular environment?
Drug that alters cellular function can increase or decrease the physiologic functions of the cell. (Ex: Increased heart rate, decreased blood pressure)
What is a therapeutic response?
Alteration of the cell to achieve the desired response
