Heat Stress Flashcards
Define Heat Stress?
Any combination of air temperature, thermal radiation, humidity, airflow, and work load which stress the body as it attemps to regulate temperature
What are factors that cause heat stress?
Environmental Factors
a. Sun b. Heat Sources 1. Incinerator 2. Engines 3. Generators 4. Laundry Dryers
What are factors that cause heat stress?
Environmental Factors
a. Sun
Define Humidity
Moisture in the air
a. Steam Leaks b. Bilge Water c. Condensation
Define Acclimatization
The act of becoming accustomed to temperature or new environment
a. Usually takes 3 weeks
What are some Common Areas onboard ship where heat stress injuries are most common?
- Machinery Spaces
- Laundries
- Sculleries
- Incinerator Room
- Flight Decks
What are some Causes and Contributors to Heat Stress Conditions?
- Steam and Water Leaks
- Boiler Air Casing Leaks
- Missing/Deteriorated Thermal Insulation
- Ventilation Deficiencies
- Weather Conditions
- Arduous Operation
What is the Physiological Heat Exposure Limit (PHEL) Chart?
A set of 6 curves that compare the WBGT index and the degree of effort or work rate to determine the maximum permissible exposure to the heat stress environment
When would you utilize PHEL Curves I-III?
- Work length is 4 hours or less and DB is equal or greater than 100 degrees
- Watch/Work Station length is great than 4 hours and DB is equal or greater than 90 degrees
When would you utilize PHEL Curve IV thru VI?
DB is equal or greater than 85 degrees
What is the assignment of PHEL Curves?
- Routine Operations: Light work, including sweeping down, painting, and cleaning lube oil strainers
- Non-Routine: Use the next higher PHEL when determining stay time
a. Increase in normal watch stander work rate, and minor equipment casualty- Assign stay times using PHEL VI
What is the assignment of PHEL Curves?
- Routine Operations: Light work, including sweeping down, painting, and cleaning lube oil strainers
- Non-Routine: Use the next higher PHEL when determining stay time
a. Increase in normal watch stander work rate, and minor equipment casualty
What is recovery time?
Minimum of twice the stay time as determined by the PHEL chart or 4 hours, whichever is shorter
What are some Signs and Symptoms of exposure to stack gas?
- Watery Eyes
- Dypnea
- Tingling
- Mild Sensation of alcohol intoxication
What are the requirements to use the Heat Stress Monitor?
- Receive training within 12 weeks
2. Complete PQS NAVEDTRA 43704
What is the process for reporting Heat Stress Injuries?
- Use an Accident and Injury Report
- Report to the Naval Safety Center
Web Enabled Safety System (WESS) - Report to the Naval Disease Reporting System (NDRS)
- Medical Event Report
- Engineering Officer
Who is responsible for reviewing Heat Stress Monitoring Reports?
- SMDR
- SMDR will review for inaccuracies and QA checks
- Will make recommendations based on crew health status
How long must the Heat Stress Surveys be maintained?
1 year
How accurate does dry bulb thermometer have to be?
- Within 5 degrees of the WBGT meter
2. If not within 5 degrees of the WBGT, the dry bulb should be repositioned
How often does the dry bulb thermometer need to be read?
- Every 4 hours for manned spaces if the temp doesn’t exceed 85 degrees
- Must be read read and recorded hourly for heat casualties or if DB temperature exceeds 85 degrees
What are the procedures for using the RS-220 WGBT?
- Wiat 5 mins for the initial DB reading and wait 3 mintues for subsequent readings
2, Hold WBGT Meter at chest level 1 foot away from the body
