Pharmacology - BP Drugs Flashcards
what is angina?
pain occurring when the oxygen supply to the myocardium is insufficient to meet its demands
what are the three types of angina?
stable
unstable
variant
what causes stable angina?
fixed narrowing of coronary vessels as a consequence of atherosclerosis
how does stable angina present?
predictable pain that comes on upon exertion
what causes unstable angina?
a thrombus in association with an atheromatous plaque
how does unstable angina present?
pain due to less exertion
what is there a risk of in unstable angina?
MI
what is variant angina associated with?
coronary artery spasm
what is hypertension?
abnormally high BP sustained over time
what do organic nitrates do?
relax all types of smooth muscle via their metabolism to NO
what effect do organic nitrates have on blood vessels?
venorelaxation
arteriolar dilatation - high doses
increased coronary blood flow
how do organic nitrates help angina?
decrease myocardial oxygen requirment
what are organic nitrates used to manage?
all types of angina
name two types of organic nitrates
glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) isosorbide mononitrate (ISMN)
how long does it take for GTN to work?
only 30 mins
