Heart Failure Flashcards
what is heart failure?
state in which the heart is unable to pump blood at a rate that meets the requirement of the tissues
name some common causes of heart failure
CHD hypertension diabetes dilated cardiomyopathy valve disease
how does heart failure present?
SOB difficulty breathing at night reduced exercise tolerance fatigue tiredness peripheral oedema
what are some possible findings suggestive of fluid overload in heart failure?
raised JVP
crackles in the lungs
gallop rhythm
peripheral oedema
what is the most useful diagnostic test when looking for a cause of heart failure?
ECG
what are some signs of fluid accumulation in the lungs on CXR?
cardiomegaly
perihilar congestion
kerley B lines
pleural effusion
what is the preferred method for looking at cardiac dysfunction at rest?
transthoracic ECHO (TTE)
what is the ejection fraction (EF)?
the percentage of blood pumped out of the heart during each beat
what is a normal EF?
> 50%
what is heart failure with EF <40% called?
heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF)
what is heart failure with normal EF called?
heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF)
what is BNP?
a cardiac hormone produced by the ventricles
what can happen to BNP levels in heart failure?
elevated
how can BNP be used to rule out heart failure?
normal = not heart failure
<150
what lifestyle changes should be implemented in heart failure?
water + salt restriction
exercise
up to date vaccinations
mental health support
