Pharmacology Flashcards
Pharmacology
the study of drugs
Drug
any substance or chemical that affects processes of an organism
The ideal Drug
Effective, Safe and selective (no side effects)
Generic Name
Short, simple all lower case letters
Trade Name
registered, patented and owned
patented is good for 17 years (10 for testing, 7 to make a profit)
Chemical name
based on molecular structure and chemistry
Generic Name Trade Name Chemical Name
aspirin Bayer ASA (acetylsalic acid)
acetaminophen Tylenol APAP (acetyl-para-aminophenol)
Ibuprofen Advil or Motrin propionic acid
Chemical Names of drugs
ACIDIC DRUGS
the active ingredient of the drug is a negative ion (an anion) has the actate ion (CH3COO-)
ionizes
separates into ions when placed in basic solutions acetylsalicic acid (aspirin)>acetylsalicylate Ion + Hydrogen Ion (H+) few hydrogen ions in the orginal solution so more can be formed
BASIC DRUGS
Alkaline Drugs: The active ingredient of the drug is a positive ion ( an cation)
ionizes when placed in acidic solutions (low pH - lots of H+)
Ions are water soluble, non-ionized compounds are fat soluble
