physical description of the drug
a) state of matter (solid, liquid, gas)
solid forms (tablets, capsules and powders) must dissolve to affect the body
size of particles
a) larger particles are timed, sustained release, enteric coated, decrease the frequency of taking the medication do not crush timed released tablets (some exceptions)
b) determines whether a solution, colloid or suspension
1) solutions- small particles evenly spread out
2) colloid- several forms: aerosol, foam, emulsion, gel
3) suspensions- made of large particles that settle out
must be shaken
some drugs are stored as a dry powder and must be reconstituted
