Pharmacodynamics Flashcards
Study of the way drugs affect the body
Pharmacodynamic Phase
It is the desirable effect
Primary effect of drug
It is the undesirable effect of drugs
The secondary effect
It is the relationship between minimal vs maximal amount of drug dose needed to produce desired response.
Dose response
Time it takes to reach minimum effective concentration after drug is administered
Onset
Drug reaches its highest blood plasma/concentration
Peak action
Lenght of time the drug has a pharmacologic effect
Duration of the drug
The secondary effect of a drug that is unintended.
Side effect
Harmful effects of a drug results from overdosage or buildup of drug in the blood because of impaired metabolism or excretion
Drug toxicity
Food slows interaction
Drug-diet interactions
Occurs when the administration of one drug before, at the same time, or after another drug alters the effect of one or both drugs
Drug interaction
Drugs with similar pharmacologic actions are taken to achieve the same degree of therapeutic effect.
Additive effect
Occurs when two different drugs increases that action of one or another drug.
Synergistic effect/synergism/potentiation
One drug w/ metabolism/elimination of a 2nd drug may result in intensified effects of the 2nd drug.
Interferance
One drug from plasma protein-binding sites by a 2nd drug increases the effects of the displaced drug.
Displacement
