Pharm. LP-4 Flashcards
Agonist
a drug that binds to the receptor, producing a similar response to the intended chemical and receptor.
Antagonist
a drug that binds to the receptor either on the primary site, or on another site, which all together stops the receptor from producing a response.
Adrenergic
working on adrenaline (epinephrine) or noradrenaline (norepinephrine)” (or on their receptors)
Cholinergic
act upon the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, the primary neurotransmitter within the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS)
Anticholingeric
block the action of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine
Adrenergic Blockers
used to treat hypertension, angina pectoris and cardiac arrhythmias
Sympathomimetics
drugs that mimic the stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system
Sympatholytics
inhibits nerve impulses of the sympathetic nervous system
Parasympathomimetics
a class of medications that activate the parasympathetic nervous system by mimicking or modifying the effects of acetylcholine
Parasympatholytics
a substance or activity that reduces the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system
Catecholamines
hormones made by your adrenal glands that are released into the body in response to physical or emotional stress
Examples:
dopamine
norepinephrine
epinephrine
Mydriasis
dilated pupil or a wider pupil
Myosis
constricted pupil or a narrower pupil
Positive chronotropic effect
increase heart rate
Positive dromotropic effect
increase the speed of electrical conduction in the heart
