Phar 1144 Flashcards
Describe what is meant by a hazardous substance
Hazardous Substances are defined as chemical or biological agents that
pose a physical or health risk.
Describe what is meant by a biohazard
Biohazards are defined as organisms that are capable of replication and causing disease in human, animal or plant.
Examples of health and physical hazards
Outline common laboratory hazards
- Biological, chemical, or radioactive material leading to physical and/or health hazard
Briefly describe biological hazards
Biological hazard includes an organism or material of biological origin that could potentially cause harm to humans, animals, or plants.
* Infectious agent and Recombinant DNA (rDNA) are biological hazards producing infection or disease in human, animal or plant.
Briefly describe chemical hazards
Chemical hazard includes chemical compounds or material of chemical origin that could potentiallycause harm to humans, animals, or plants.
- They should be limited to the use under a properly working fume hood.
- Chemicals can release hazardous fumes which not only harm the environment, but they can be a
major health threat.
Outline some safe practices
- Decontaminate as needed
- Know emergency procedures
- Keep the laboratory neat and clean
Define what an MSDS is
- All chemicals/biological agents come with a MSDS.
- Communicates the information necessary regarding
hazards associated with them. - Can aid in precautionary measure to take when using them.
- Tell you the information needed for first aid.
Define what PPE is
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Includes gloves, safety glasses, lab coat, masks.
Define Sharps - Hazards
- Any instrument, tool, or item that has
rigid, acute edges, protuberances or corners capable
of cutting, piercing, ripping or puncturing such as syringes, blades, and broken glass. - All sharps must be placed into a “sharps bin” labelled either with “Biohazard” or “Infectious Waste”.
Briefly outline the fume hood
The fume hood is used with chemicals and preparing solutions.
- The hood is designed to minimize your exposure to airborne contaminants.
- This is not to be used with biohazardous materials.
Briefly outline the biological safety cabinet
The biological safety cabinet (BSC) is used as a containment for infectious agents
- Has HEPA filter in the exhaustsystem to protect the environment and yourself.
- It is able to remove both very small and large particles
Define an autoclave
An autoclave is a machine that can reach high temperatures to sterilise
agents.
Outline the ranges for measuring equipment
