PFALZ - Regional Bio Flashcards
Pfalz Bio
Located between the Rhine and the low-lying Haardt mountain range (a continuation of the Alsatian Vosges), it covers a stretch of land 75km long x 25km across and is bordered by Alsace to the south and Rheinhessen to the north.
An increasing number of the finest Riesling and Spatburgunder come from this region, while producing more everyday wine than any other region by far.
Pfalz is the second largest of the 13 Anbaugebeite regions planted under vine and is so densely planted that vines outnumber inhabitants 600:1. Riesling dominates and makes up around a quarter of the entire vineyard area.
Here Riesling is noticeably richer and riper than other regions. Dornfelder is the next most popular grape, followed by Muller-Thurgau, Portugieser and Spatburgunder.
The style of wine is similar to Alsace, being close neighbors, the same climate and sharing many of the same varietals. All of the top vineyards are located on the long thin strip at the base of the hills.
