PERSONALITY Flashcards
what is personality
unique psychological makeup
personality should affect the way players / coaches approach training and matches
some will cope with pressure better than others
nature vs nurture
are we born with out characteristics
can they be learnt or changed
what are the 3 personality theories
trait theory
social learning theory
interactionist
trait theory
individuals are born with innate characteristics that are stable, enduring and stay the same in different situations
attempts to predict behaviour as they believe people behave in the same way
problems with the trait theory
doesn’t take into account that personality and behavior can change depending on the situation
doesn’t consider that personalities can be formed by experience
social learning approach
observe - identify - reinforce -copy
BEHAVIOUR IS LEARNT FROM SIGNIFICANT OTHERS VIA SOCIALISATION
learn by observation and copying
loud, bright, successful
interactionist perspective
a theory which combines trait and social learning to predict behavior in a certain situation
an explanation that behavior is affected by our personality traits and the situation
what are the 2 interactionist approaches
lewin
Hollander
lewin approach
traits we are born with are adapted depending on the situation
therefore a player can change their behavior depending on the situation
BEHAVIOUR IS A FUNCTION OF PERSONALITY AND THE ENVIRONMENT
B = F(P*E)
helps a coach to predict player behaviour`
Hollander approach
personality is layered
1. psychological core represents beliefs and values that are unlikely to change
2. typical response- the usual response a player would make in that situation
3. role related behavior -implies further changes to behavior may be needed as the situation demands
credulous approach
some people support the idea that personality can predict behavior
link between personality and behavior is accepted
skeptical approach
some people think personality does not actually predict behavior
link between behavior and personality isn’t accepted
how can knowledge of the interactionist perspective improve performance
- coach can substitute potential unacceptable behavior
- coach could identify situations that cause inappropriate actions and set up these situations in training so the players learn to cope
- coach can try change behavior by encouraging players to adapt to certain situations
