benefits of goal setting
increasing motivation - when a player achieves target they experience sense of pride, which increases intrinsic motivation
improving confidence- as targets are reached
regulating and sustaining effort - players continue to strive to reach targets, might try harder as goal nears completion
what is goal setting
reduces the effect of social loafing and improves cohesion
what are the 4 types of goals
outcome/product
task oriented
performance
process
outcome/product goals
set against the performance of others and based on a result
if goal is realistic then motivation is maintained
athletes not concerned with manner or technique
goal not being achieved may lead to loss in motivation
performance goals
athlete sets a goal to better their own performance rather than comparing to others
e.g. personal best
reduce anxiety in competition and provide more consistent motivation
task-oriented goals
getting a better performance
improvements in technique or performance
compares against own previous performance
can achieve goal even if don’t win
motivation maintained if goals are met
process goals
based on improving technique
e.g. arm action of swimming race
improved technique should result in a better performance
goals should include both process and performance
SMARTER PRINCIPLE
specific - specific to performer and sport
measures - some form of assessment to aid motivation
achievable - should be able to reach their goal (motivation)
realistic - goal should be within reach otherwise causing anxiety
time bound - short term and long term steps should be clearly defined as well as a deadline
evaluate - performer and coach should evaluate how and when the goal was achieved (WWW/EBI) helps set future targets
re-do - if the goal has not been reached or think they can do it better the do it again.. reset targets if unreasonable
