A

increasing motivation - when a player achieves target they experience sense of pride, which increases intrinsic motivation
improving confidence- as targets are reached
regulating and sustaining effort - players continue to strive to reach targets, might try harder as goal nears completion

SMARTER PRINCIPLE

A

specific - specific to performer and sport
measures - some form of assessment to aid motivation
achievable - should be able to reach their goal (motivation)
realistic - goal should be within reach otherwise causing anxiety
time bound - short term and long term steps should be clearly defined as well as a deadline
evaluate - performer and coach should evaluate how and when the goal was achieved (WWW/EBI) helps set future targets
re-do - if the goal has not been reached or think they can do it better the do it again.. reset targets if unreasonable
