What is the Trait Theory?
Innate characteristics. Stable, consistent and enduring. Attempts to predict behaviour.
What are the negatives of the Trait theory?
Changed personality within different situations.
What is the Social Learning Approach?
Learn from those held in high esteem through socialisation.
Define socialisation.
Developing personality traits by associating and learning from others.
What are the two types of influences?
Primary- family
Secondary- schools, media, etc
What do people copy in this approach?
Behaviour seen as successful and powerful and is consistently shown. Copy when reinforced (especially positively).
Define vicarious learning.
or observational learning, occurs when a person is motivated to learn by watching someone else work and be rewarded.
What is the Interactionist perspective?
combines trait theory and social learning to predict behaviour in a specific situation.
What is Lewin’s theory?
Indicates born traits are adapted to situation. B= f(PxE) - behaviour is a function of personality and environment.
What are the three levels of the personality as described in the Hollander Approach?
1 The core of the performer= stable+solid, values and beliefs of individual
2 Typical responses use inherent traits displayed to specific situations.
3 Role Related Behaviour= performer may adopt/adapt very specific role when situation demands.
Define Credulous Approach.
Believe the theories. Accept link personality can predict behaviour.
Define the Sceptical Approach.
Don’t the theories. Doubt link personality can predict behaviour.
How can a coach use the Hollander Approach to improve training for a performer?
-Coach predicts potential unacceptable or aggressive behaviour +remove from situation to prevent potential red card.
-Identify situations cause inappropriate actions and create similar situations in training.
-Change player behaviour by encouraging players to adapt to specific circumstances.
