Nature
Your background and were you came from so natural aspects (genetic)
Nurture
All the external environments that affect a persons development
Socialisation
Developing personality traits by associating and learning from others
The social learning theory
Observe - identify - reinforced - copy
The interactionist perspective
A theory which combines Trait and Social Learning to predict behaviour in a specific
situation
The Lewin formula
B = f (PxE)
Behaviour = function x (personality x environment)
The Hollander approach
The core - values and beliefs of the individual
Typical response - The use of inherent traits displayed to specific situations
Role related behaviour - Suggests that a performer may adapt or adopt a very specific role when the situation demands
Hollander approach theory example
The core - hard working competitor
Typical responses - loves to attack and works hard to create overlaps
Role related behaviour - tight games they track back and defend more
Credulous Approach
you believe the theories. You accept a link that personality can predict behaviour
Sceptical Approach
you don’t believe them. You doubt the link that personality can predict behaviour
Name three theories that attempt to explain how personality characteristics are formed.
Trait, social learning, interactionist.
Classify the three theories named above as to whether they represent the
nature or nurture debate in sport.
Answer: nature= trait theory, nurture = social learning and interactionist
The three theories
Trait - We are born with innate characteristics called traits. They are stable, consistent and enduring.
Social Learning Approach- Nurture - Suggests behaviour is learned from significant others by socialisation. We learn from people we hold in high esteem ie role models, friends,
parents……teachers
The Interactionist Perspective - A theory which combines Trait and Social Learning to predict behaviour in a specific
situation. This indicates that born traits are adapted according to the situation. Leads to stable behaviour in certain situations
Bandura’s social learning theory
suggests that observation and modeling play a primary role in how and why people learn
Observe, Identify, Reinforced and Copy
