An individuals behavioural characteristics that make him or her different from others
Characteristics of a type A personality
Impatience, intolerance, and high levels of stress
Characteristics of a type B personality
Relaxed, tolerant, lower personal stress
Stable personality trait
Someone who does not swing from one emotion to another but is usually constant in emotional behaviour
Unstable personality trait
Changeable and unpredictable and the person is highly anxious
Characteristics of an extrovert
Someone who seeks social situations and likes excitement
Lacks concentration
More slowly aroused than introverts
Characteristics of an introvert
Calm, Even tempered, does not seek social situations, enjoys peace and quiet, good at concentrating
High levels of arousal naturally
Social learning(personality)
Person’s personality changes with the situation and that environment influences behaviour.
Theory shows that our personalities are shaped by those around us and more likely to adopt the personality of role models.
Interactionist(personality)
We are all born with certain personality characteristics but some of these can be modified by interacting with the environment.
Explains why personalities change in situations e.g a tennis player being quiet off court and loud and brash on court
Self actualisation
The individuals desire to explore and understand the world so that they can grow personally and reach potential.

Lively, easy going , responsive
What characteristics does a unstable extrovert have?
Changeable, excitable , aggressive
What characteristics does a stable introvert have?
Calm, even tempered, controlled
What characteristics does a unstable introvert have ?
Anxious, sober , moody
Drawbacks of trait theory
Does not recognise effect of different environmental situations
Limited view
Doesn’t consider other people having an effect on shaping your personality
Drawbacks of social learning theory
Some people show consistent behaviour over time and in certain situations
Dosen’t recognise traits
Personalities usually more stable-less extreme
Positives of interactionist theory
Shows how people can differently then normal in certain situations
Individualistic approach
Shows performers from the same sport don’t always have the same characteristics
