Motivation Flashcards
Motivation
‘ the internal mechanisms and external stimuli which arouse and direct our behaviour
Intrinsic motivation
Internal drives to participate and do well
E.g enjoyment , pride, well-being
Extrinsic motivation
External factors- rewards, medals, badges, prizes.
Reinforcement from others can insure a action is repeated
Drive theory
Relationship between arousal and performance is linear
High arousal=high performance
If the dominant response is correct this will enhance performance
However, may not be correct in beginners
Inverted U
States that arousal levels increase so does performance levels but only up to a certain point which occurs at moderate arousal level.
Once past this, performance decreases.
Performer becomes over-aroused/anxious
E.g a cognitive stage learner is best taught basic skills in a low arousal environment
Catastrophe theory
Theory takes into account somatic anxiety and cognitive anxiety
If there is an increase in cognitive anxiety and somatic anxiety is high then performance will decline.
High levels of cognitive anxiety and there is a continuous increase in somatic anxiety or arousal then performance will be suddenly deteriorate
If this occurs performance will be able to improve but not back to its original level
