Personalities Flashcards
Trait theory
- We are born with innate characteristics
- They are stable consistent and enduring
- Attempts to profile the individual
- Example: extroverted people will always give their opinion and be loud
Social learning Approach
- Suggests behaviour is learned for significant others by socialisation
- Learn from role models, friends, family, teachers
- We copy behaviours that we see as successful and powerful and that is consistently shown to us
- We copy when it is reinforced (especially positively)
Socialisation
Developing personality traits by associating and learning from others
Two types of socialisation
- Primary (Family)
- Secondary (School/media etc.)
The Interactionist Perspective
- Combines trait and social learning to predict behaviour in a specific situation
- Indicates that born traits are adopted according to the situation
- Behaviour is a function of personality and environment (Formula is B=f(PxE))
- Behaviour is adapted to the environment therefore
Change in environment = change in behaviour - Leads to stable behave in certain situation
Hollander Approach to Interactionist Theory
3 features:
1. Core - Values and beliefs of the individual
2. Typical Responses - use of inherit traits displayed
to specific situations
3. Role Related Behaviour - performer may adapt or
adopt a very specific role
when the situation
demands
- The more the environment has an influence the more likely the behaviour is to change
Credulous Approach
You believe the theories. You accept the link between personality and behaviour
Sceptical Approach
You don’t believe the theories. You doubt the link that personality can predict approach
How can Interactionist perspective Improve performance
- Predict aggressive behaviour and sub off player before red card
- Recreate game situations in training to allow the players to become accustomed to them in games
- Try to change a players behaviour by encouraging a player to adapt to circumstances
- If a player understands their own behaviour they can monitor and adapt
- Core values hard to alter so need to be reinforced by significant others
