What beliefs did Puritans hold?
They preached in an open forum - whereas Laud’s catechism were more structured, but alienated the illiterate
Which two groups did the reforms also upset and why?
Gentry were angered by the abolition of their benches and the raised chancel elevated the clergy angering Calvinists - altar also happened to face towards Rome
What was the challenge of St. Gregory’s church?
1633 parishioners challenged the movement of the altar , in opposition to its changes and the removal of family pews
How did Charles react to the St. Gregory’s case?
He brought them before the PC to see if he could establish precedent for imprisoning religious critics
Why was John Williams imprisoned?
A bishop, he was imprisoned in 1637 for his criticism of the altar policy in ‘The Holy Table, Name and Thing’ - even the term altar was regarded as Catholic

Bastwick, Burton and Prynne were brought before Court of the Star Chamber, comprised of PC, for challenging religious policy
Found guilty, imprisoned, fined £5,000 and had ears cropped in public

Their cruel punishment seemed all the more excessive due to their professional vocations - lawyer, doctor and cleric

Feb 1638 Star Chamber condemned him for printing unlicensed literature - his and Bastwick’s
Fined and then tied to a cart that pulled him 2 miles from Fleet Prison to Westminster and whipped every few paces

Why was there a migration movement to North America?
Puritans were unsatisfied with their lot, radicals such as Pym and Fiennes were involved in colonisation organisations e.g. Providence Island Company
