What beliefs did Laudians hold?
Rejected predestination, placed less emphasis on the Bible, valued ritual and ceremony
What was the ‘beauty of holiness’?
Included stained glass windows, increase service music, , vestments for ministers, removal of gentry’s ornamental pews and general emphasis on ceremony
What was the most contentious Laudian measure?
The altar - would be railed off, elevated with decorated cloth and against far east wall of the church
Puritans were angered by this - favoured plain churches and considered them elements of idolatry and Catholicism
How did Laud aim to emphasise conformity?
Order was imposed through the sermons based on the catechism - shifted focus from the Bible

Legally attacked the Feoffees for Impropriations, an organisation which sought to establish Puritan preachers
How did Charles enforce the persecution of the Puritans?
He reissued the Book of Sport in 1633 and commanded clerics to read it from the pulpit on punishment of expulsion - enforced through episcopal visitations and ecclesiastical courts
How strictly were the Laudian rules followed?
It was dependant on the local clergy and govt - areas like Nottinghamshire remained much the same
How did Charles and the Puritans view each other?
Puritans viewed increase Catholic/Arminian presence at court as subversion of the monarchy, while Charles viewed them as subverting his religious authority
When were Laud’s measures codified and to what reaction?
1640 through canon law - there was huge backlash in Scotland and England
How did Laud improve the clergy?
Funded scholarships and universities and asked the PN to contribute to these too
