What is pernicious anaemia
A
Is a disease in which not enough RBC are produced due to deficiency of vitamin B12

Causes of pernicious anaemia
A
- In adequate intake of vitamin B12
- Impaired absorption of vitamin B12 due to intristic factor deficiency
- Due to the immune system attacking the parietal cells of the stomach

Signs and symptoms of pernicious anaemia
A
Shortness of breath
Chest pains
Pale skin
Weakness
Confusions

Laboratory diagnosis of pernicious anaemia
A
MCV is high
MCHC is normal

Tests that are done to diagnose pernicious anaemia
A
- Bone marrow biopsy
- Intrinsic factor deficiency test. Blood is tested for antibodies against intrinsic factors

Treatment and management of pernicious anaemia
A
- Oral doses of folic acid
- Can be managed by fbc to measure vitamin b12
- Blood test to to monitor replacement treatment
