A

Causes of pernicious anaemia

A
  1. In adequate intake of vitamin B12
  2. Impaired absorption of vitamin B12 due to intristic factor deficiency
  3. Due to the immune system attacking the parietal cells of the stomach

A

MCV is high
MCHC is normal

Tests that are done to diagnose pernicious anaemia

A
  1. Bone marrow biopsy
  2. Intrinsic factor deficiency test. Blood is tested for antibodies against intrinsic factors

Treatment and management of pernicious anaemia

A
  1. Oral doses of folic acid
  2. Can be managed by fbc to measure vitamin b12
  3. Blood test to to monitor replacement treatment
