inflammation of the peritoneal cavity

what are the causes of peritonitis?
primary- ascites
spontaneous bacterial peritonitis
secondary- underlying cause
- bile
-malignancy
what are the bacterial causes of peritonitis?
gram negative- E- coli and klebsiella
gram positive- staph aureus
what are the chemical causes of peritonitis?
- bile
-old clotted blood
-ruptured ectopic pregnancy - intestinal perforation
what are the risk factors for peritonitis?
- liver disease
- cirrhosis
-ascites
what is the treatment for peritonitis?
- ABCDE
- Iv fluid and IV Abx
- paracentesis
- surgery
describe the pathology of SBP
- bacteria from gut
- to lymph nodes
- to blood stream
- to ascitic fluid
- SBP
What is a complication of SBP?
septicemia
what are the symptoms of peritonitis?
- sudden onset of severe abdo pain- then collapse + septic shock, fever
- rigidity helps pain- guarding
- ascites
- Nausea and vomiting
-diarrhoea
