define non alcoholic fatty liver disease
chronic liver disease not due to alcoholism and instead results from fat deposition in the liver
what are the risk factors of non alcoholic fatty liver disease?
- obesity
-poor diet and low exercise - T2DM
- high cholesterol
- smoking
-high bp - drugs
-middle aged onwards
describe the progression of non alcoholic fatty liver disease
- Hepatosteatosis
- ( non alcoholic fatty liver) - non alcoholic steatohepatitis
- fibrosis
- cirrhosis
what are the symptoms of non alcoholic fatty liver disease?
- usually asymptomatic and any findings normally found are incidental initially
- if very severe- signs of liver failure, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, hepatomegaly
how is non alcoholic fatty liver disease diagnosed?
- bloods
- imaging
- biopsy
what blood tests would be done to diagnose non alcoholic fatty liver disease? what do they look like?
- deranged LFTS- high PT/INR, low albumin, high bilirubin
- FBC- thrombocytopenia. hyperglycaemia
what imaging would be done to diagnose non alcoholic liver disease?
ultrasound abdomen and liver
what is the non invasive scoring system used for?
to asses the risk of fibrosis
what treatment is done for non alcoholic liver disease?
- lose weight- low BMI
- control RF ( statins, metformin, ACE-i)
- vitamin E
what complications are associated with non alcoholic liver disease?
- HE
- ascites
- HCC
- portal HTN
- oesophageal varices
