Peritoneum Flashcards
what type of membrane is the peritoneum?
serous membrane
what is the function of the serous membrane (peritoneum)
protects and covers the organs within the abdominal cavity
serous membrane produces serous fluid which lubricates and helps expansion of the gut
which peritoneum lines the abdominal cavity?
parietal
which peritoneum lines the abdominal organs?
visceral peritoneum
what is the potential space between the parietal and visceral peritoneum called?
peritoneal cavity
where is the greater omental bursa (sac) located?
from the diaphragm and extends down to the pelvic cavity anteriorly
where is the lesser sac located?
behind the liver and the stomach
how are the two omental bursa connected?
connected by a narrow, short neck called the epiploic foramen
what are the greater and lesser omenta?
the omenta are doubling up of the peritoneum which contain a lot of fat
what organs is the lesser omenta attached to?
between the liver and the stomach
what organs is the greater omenta attached to?
the transverse colon and the stomach
what is a mesentery?
a doubling up of the visceral peritoneum which attaches to the posterior/parietal wall
it provides a passageway for the blood supply
what are intra peritoneal organs?
they are almost entirely covered by peritoneum
they are mobile
what are retroperitoneal organs?
organs which lie behind the peritoneum and so only have one surface covered by peritoneum
they are mobile as they are attached to the posterior wall
what gives rise to the blood supply of the abdomen?
mesenteries
