Peripheral Vascular System Flashcards
A condition of leg pain caused by ischemia (inadequate blood supply) of the muscles. Chiefly in the calf muscles, brought on by walking.
Intermittent Claudication
“Butt claudication”. Buttock muscles and male genitalia are underserved (ischemia)
Leriche Syndrome
This is the major cause of clinical arterial problems. It causes large and small efferent vessel disease (arteries).
Diabetes Mellitus
A vasospastic disorder causing discoloration of the fingers, toes, or occasionally, other areas. Nails may be brittle with longitudinal ridges. Stress and cold are classic triggers. Pale, cyanosis, rubor (redness).
Raynaud’s disease
A condition in which a blood clot in a vein causes inflammation and pain - usually the calf.
Thrombophlebitis
Restricted vein flow allows for chronic stagnation and pooling of blood. Caused by prior thrombophlebitis, or varicose veins. There is swelling and ankle pigmentation.
Chronic venous insufficiency
Gnarled, enlarged veins, most commonly appearing in the legs and feet. May lead to stagnation (insufficiency).
Varicose veins
Pitting edema which is usually bilateral (lets say in the legs), which is worse at days end is a sign of:
Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
Caused by a parasitic worm (spread by mosquitos), in which there is swelling and thickening of the skin due to damaged lymph nodes and vessels. Also called Filariasis.
Elephantiasis
Inflammation of the lymphatic system.
Lymphangitis
Relatively hard edema of the subcutaneous tissue, caused by hypothyroidism. It is due to an increased content (and accumulation) of mucopolysaccharides (proteoglycans)
Myxedema
This is associated with hyperpigmentation, superficial ulcers around the ankle, and is seen in congestive heart failure.
