Ear Flashcards
The cone of light reflection should travel from the umbo to the ____ quadrant of the tympanic membrane
Anterior inferior
A localized round bump at approximately the center of the tympanic membrane known as the umbo is what?
Tip of the malleus
Ear wax produced by sebaceous and apocrine sweat glands
Cerumen
Otalgia
Ear pain
Ear discharge or drainage
Otorrhea
A buzzing, clicking or ringing sound only perceived by the patient. “The ringing just wont stop”
Tinnitus
Dizziness or sensation of movement. Labyrinth/CN8 disorders
Vertigo
Gouty deposits of Uric Acid, white discreet nodules along the upper helix
Tophi
Classic triad of vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss
Meniere disease
Inflammation of the inner ear. Caused most commonly by viral infection.
Labyrinthitis
Inflammation or infection of the external auditory canal (bacterial or fungal). “Swimmer’s ear”
Otitis externa
Inflammation of the middle ear due to Eustachian tube dysfunction. Pain is aggravated by bending over
Otitis media
Accumulation of opaque pus in the middle ear cavity. Causes inflammation of the drum
Suppurative otitis media
In this infection a “vacuum” is created because of Eustachian tube dysfunction. Fluid is sucked into the middle ear cavity and bubbles are seen in the fluid behind the drum. Fluid is clear or yellow (sometimes describes as light blue)
Serous otitis media
In otosclerosis there is abnormal, progressive bone remodeling of the middle ear when the ____ becomes adhered and decreases vibration (bone)
Stapes
Accumulation of debris in a cyst-like pocket. Looks like a white granulated nodule anywhere along the rim of the drum
Cholesteatoma
Calcification of tissue in the eardrum and middle ear due to chronic inflammation. Described as chalky, opaque patches
Tympanosclerosis
Fusion (ankylosis) of the ear ossicles
Otosclerosis
A vibrating 512hz tuning fork is placed on skull apex. Sound is normally heard in both ears equally. What is test called?
Weber test
A vibrating tuning fork is placed on the mastoid and moved near the EAM when no longer heard
Rinne test
Vibrating tuning fork is placed near patient’s EAM, when they can no longer hear it is quickly transferred to Doctor’s EAM to compare conduction ability
Schwabach test
