Peripheral Vascular System Flashcards
Bruit
Harsh or musical intermittent auscultatory sound, especially an abnormal one
Claudication
Pain resulting from muscle ischemia presenting with a dull ache, muscle fatigue, and cramps
Edema
Accumulation of an excessive amount of watery fluid in cells, tissues, or serous cavities
Embolism
Obstruction or occlusion of a vessel by an embolus
Homan’s sign
Pain on passive dorsiflexion of the foot which may be indicative of thrombosis in the lower extremity
Hum
Nonpathologic venous phenomenon commonly found in children
Hypertension
Persisting high arterial blood pressure; generally established guidelines are values exceeding 140 mmHg systolic or exceeding 90 mmHg diastolic blood pressures
Hypotension
abnormally low arterial blood pressure; generally established guidelines are values less than 90 mmHg systolic
Orthopnea
Discomfort in breathing that is brought on or aggravated by lying flat
Peripheral arterial disease
Stenosis of the blood supply to the extremities by atherosclerotic plaques
Phlebitis
Inflammation of a vein
Preeclampsia
Specific pregnancy syndrome associated with hypertension occurring after the 20th week of pregnancy and the presence of proteinuria
Raynaud phenomenon
Vascular disorder resulting in exaggerated spasms of the arterioles in response to cold
Regurgitation
Backflow of blood due to incompetent valves
Syncope
Loss of consciousness and postural tone caused by diminished cerebral blood flow
Temporal arteritis
Inflammatory disease of the aortic arc
Thrombophlebitis
Venous inflammation with thrombus formation
Thrombus
Clot in the cardiovascular system formed during life from constituents of blood; may be occlusive or attached to the vessel or heart wall without obstructing the lumen (mural thrombus)
Varicose vein
Dilated and swollen veins with decreased blood flow and increased pressure resulting in incompetence of the vessel, valves, or obstruction in the proximal vein
Venous thrombosis
Blood clot that forms within a vein
