Musculoskeletal System Flashcards
Abduction
Movement of limbs toward the lateral plane or away from the axial line of a limb
Adduction
Movement of the limbs toward the medial plane of the body or toward the axial line of the limb
Ankylosing spondylitis
Hereditary chronic inflammatory disease, initially affecting the lumbar spine and sacroiliac joints
Arthritis
Inflammation of a joint, usually accompanied by pain and frequently changes in structure
Arthropathy
Any disease affecting a joint
Arthrosis
Joint affection caused by trophic degeneration
Bursitis
Inflammation of a bursa, especially those located between bony prominences and muscle or tendon
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Pressure on the median nerve at the point at which it goes through the carpel tunnel of the wrist
Crepitus
Crinkly cracking, grating feeling or sound in the joints, skin, or lungs; quality of sound is simulated by Rice Krispies in milk; quality of touch is somewhat simulated by rubbing hair between fingers
Dupuytren’s contracture
Contracture of palmar fascia causing the ring and little fingers to bend into the palm so that they cannot be extended
Eversion
Turning outward
Fibromyalgia
Painful, nonarticular condition that leads to diffuse musculoskeletal discomfort
Gibbus
Sharp, angular deformity associated with a collapsed vertebra due to osteoporosis
Goniometer
Apparatus to measure joint movements and angles
Inversion
Turning inward
Kyphosis
Increased convex curvature of the thoracic spine
Lordosis
Increased concave curvature of the lumbar spine
Osteoarthritis
Deterioration of the articular cartilage covering bone ends in the synovial joints
Osteomyelitis
Infection of the bone
Osteoporosis
Decrease of bone mass that occurs due to bone resorption that is more rapid than bone deposition
Polydactyly
Condition of either the hand or foot which results in more than five digits
Pronation
Act of turning the hand so the palm faces downward or backward
Radial head subluxation (nursemaid’s elbow)
Dislocation injury of the elbow
Scoliosis
Lateral curvature of the spine; depending on the etiology, there may be one curve, or primary and secondary compensatory curves; scoliosis may be “fixed” as a result of muscle and/or bone deformity or “mobile” as a result of unequal muscle contraction
Simian
A single crease extending across the palm which is associated with Down syndrome
Supination
Act of turning the hand so the palm faces upward
Syndactyly
Congenital condition that results in the fusion of digits of the hand or foot
Tendonitis
Inflammation of a tendon
Tenosynovitis
Inflammation of a sheath of a tendon or the tendon
