Peripheral Vascular Disease and Peripheral Arterial Occlusive Disease Flashcards
what is PAD?
atherosclerotic changes leading to arterial stenosis
what is the most common symptom of PAD
intermittent claudication- defined as reproducible ischemic muscle pain with activity, relieved by rest
what are risk factors for PAD?
-smoking
-HTN
-Atherosclerosis
-DM
-hypercholesterolemia
-age >60
How do you diagnose PAD
ultrasonography
MRA
CT
ABI
what is a normal ABI Value
what is sever?
normal 0.9-1.30
severe <0.4
what surgical interventions can be completed with PAD
angioplasty/stenting
endarterectomy
bypass grafting
What are some exercise limitations with PVD and PAD
inadequate between blood flow and metabolic demand
produces sensation of burning/aches in calf/thigh/buttock
pain subsides with rest
what are some changes that need to be made in FITT principles for PVD and PAD
we want to walk into their symptoms but not go past 3 on the claudication scale
can exercise change when claudication pain starts?
yes pt can exercise longer before onset of pain
