Module 1: Integumentary System Flashcards
Identify and describe the basic structure of skin
intact skin, including the ability of the skin to serve as a barrier to environmental threats such as bacteria, pressure, shear, friction and moisture
Function of the integumentary system
- protection/immunity
-protects against pathogens, decreases water loss - temperature regulation
-provides insulation
-related to dilation and constriction of blood vessels within the layers of the skin
-allows for sweating - sensation
-contains various nerve endings, including for pain, light touch - assists in vitamin D synthesis and indicator of vitamin B levels
What are the 3 layers of skin
- epidermis- outermost
- dermis- middle
- hypodermis- innermost
What are the 3 primary functions of the dermis
- thermoregulation
- storage of water/maintaining hydration
- provides nutrients and waste removal for itself and the epidermis
What else does the dermis contain
blood vessels
lymphatic vessels
glands
nerve endings
hair follicles
collagen
What are the functions of the hypodermis
subcutaneous tissue
attaches skin to underlying bone and muscle
contains loose connective tissue, adipose tissue and elastin
contains 50% of body fat
provides insulation and shock absorption
Risk factors that affect wound healing
comorbities- cardiovascular, diabetes, spinal cord injury
nutrition
obesity
smoking, alcohol/drug use
sedentary or limited mobility
impaired sensation
risk prone behavior- high risk activities, exposure
